The Animals of the Popol Vuh

This portfolio is about the group of animals that are depicted in the pages of the Popol Vuh, the book of Mayan mythology. In it, the serpent, bats, ants, birds, tapirs and other animals play a role in the creation of the world.

Some of the works were made following closely the Popol Vuh writings. Other were made freely, letting imagination run and in occasions even with a slight political humor.

The art works were made using the technique named by Alicea as "fused paper".  This technique uses very thin handmade paper layered one on top of another while wet, fusing together upon drying.  The portfolio include a series of 23 works which are unique, and for which 16 are shown here. Year 1997.
